Pop Almanac
The Pop Almanac Podcast #9: Instant Classics, Part 2
Nov 16, 2011 | 12:50 pm
Fresh off a trip to San Antonio, Brendan begins this week's Pop Almanac by messing with Texas (specifically, the Alamo). Should it be remembered? Should middle schoolers, like Duncan did in seventh grade in Houston, be forced to visit?
Then, adressing news clearly directly influenced by the second episode of this very podcast, your hosts address the resignation of Brett Ratner as the producer of the Oscar ceremony. The victory is bittersweet, since Eddie Murphy resigned from hosting as well, to be replaced by Billy Crystal (when there were so many other potential replacements that would have been less vanilla).
Finally, the topic at hand: after two long months, the concept of Instant Classics from the first episode is brought up, on the heels of a suspiciously similar list of "New Classics" in an article on Slate.com.
After covering movies and tv in depth long ago, Brendan and Duncan discuss the music, books, sports figures, and other pop culture ephemera that qualify for classic status from the last decade or so (while lamenting the poor taste on display from Slate: "I Gotta Feeling"? Really?).
