While it pains us to see many of the old dusty nooks taken over by commercial businesses, Austin still has solid staple vintage that doesn’t disappoint. Whether they're new shops just coming onto the scene, or our go-to spots for classic vintage finds, these five shops are working hard to keep us all unique.
Out of the Past Collectibles
5341 Burnet Rd.
Be warned: If you pick up a dish at this scary good spot, there’s a chance you will unearth the 25 perched under it, so always, always ask for help. (If you don't, the owner will emerge from some backroom and you shall be warned.) Still, I’ve picked up an entire collection of silver, an amazing lamp, midcentury treasures, and the perfect bar glassware at this sweet shop — and all for fair prices. Out of the Past also has an incredible vinyl and music poster collection, but you will have to dig. And make a note to check it out the next time you need a gift; the shop is brimming with unique housewarmings, odd vases, strange signage, and baubles and beads curated to delight.
Uncommon Objects
1602 Fortview Rd.
When Uncommon Objects moved from its prime South Congress locale, it was hard for everyone to accept. Luckily, its new location doesn't disappoint. As a prop stylist for many years in New York, this remains my favorite place in the country to find inspiration while picking up shoot supplies. (Yes, I said the country.) The merchandising is so impeccable, they make magazines look lazy. From furniture to rare collectibles and curious found objects, everything is well curated and artfully displayed. Big Bertha’s Paradise Vintage

Henry, Big Bertha's owner, has long been my secret weapon to looking and feeling high-fashion while on a hippie-chick budget. While some of his pieces are insanely rare, a la ‘80s and ‘90s couture he scores while scouring the planet, he does have affordable pieces worth trying on. The best thing about Henry is he is an amazing person and makes everyone feel special, beautiful, and at home. That decadent feeling of having a personal stylist on call especially for you? That’s what you actually get when you visit Henry. For decades, he's lovingly worked with all the local magazines and stylists-in-the-making, including myself, remaining an Austin treasure.

There’s a Joni Mitchell in all of us, and one of the best places to find the pieces no one else will be seen in is Feathers. Over the years, Feathers has perfected its buying, keeping pieces accessible and realistic, but still special. Sparkly caftans still in great condition, vintage denim that actually fits, awesome leather cross-body bags, strange and wonderful sweaters, and jewelry to perfectly match that very special Jesse Kamm onesie makes it a must-hit when in Austin. (Torchy’s, Feathers, Jo’s Coffee, check.)
Laced With Romance Vintage

To this day, Laced With Romance Vintage remains my favorite vintage store anywhere — including Paris. I love rare things, Victoriana, and things that are scaled. I am not happy in a dress too tight on my waist; instead, I want some draped drama. I don’t want to jam my goods into shorty shorts; instead, I want a coulotte made of actual cotton that isn’t too high on my waist. I don’t want to look like I came out of Gilley’s; instead, I want to look like I am having a cocktail on the Cote d'Azur. All this and more can be found at Laced With Romance, a mecca for beautiful vintage. You’ll have to pay more, but these pieces are worth it.
