Fresa's Chicken al Carbon brings a giant chicken mascot and fresh take-away foodto Austin at a decent price
You can't miss the brand new Fresa's at Lamar and 9th; there is a huge, colorful chicken sign spinning just above it. Fresa's Chicken al Carbon, open on Monday, April 16, is the latest brainchild of Larry Maguire, the man behind Lambert's, Perla's and the latest restaurant that's been taking Austin by storm, Elizabeth Street Cafe.
Along with his partner Tom Moorman, Maguire has an ambitious goal for Fresa's: He wants to compete with Whole Foods for people picking up fresh, high quality food for takeaway. Located in the spot that used to be Emerald City Press, Fresa's has no dine-in seating. It's all to-go food from a walk-up window or drive-through.
But the place is a far cry from most fast food, drive-through joints. Fresa's solves the problem of wanting the convenience of quick takeaway food, at reasonable prices, that is still really healthy and as tasty as a much higher-end restaurant. There's no excuse for McDonald's or Taco Bell anymore, folks.
I had the pleasure of getting to preview Fresa's food Friday night; I picked up a meal and took it down to the Long Center to eat while enjoying the free outdoor Stardust Orchestra concert. What Fresa's has done is found a source for farm-raised, all natural, organic chicken (from Peeler Farms) at prices that enable them to keep their menu prices decent. They take that chicken, marinate it and then slow-grill it al carbon style.
I ordered the #1 meal, achiote and citrus marinated chicken (which you can order by the half or whole chicken) that comes rice, beans, grilled onion, lime, jalapeño, salsa and homemade tortillas. The half chicken is $14 and the whole is $24 for the whole meal. I also tried one of the vegetarian options, the Veggie al Carbon which is a sandwich of black bean hummus, sprouts, avocado, grilled onion and grilled queso fresco ($8).
Both meals were extremely flavor-filled; the chicken was a wonder, rivaling any sort of grilled chicken I could get at most restaurants in town. I adored the side of potato salad; I am very picky about potato salad, and this one made with chipotle and cilantro. The veggie sandwich, combined with the two veg sides made one of the heartiest, best-tasting veg meals I've had in ages (Fresa's also has three large salads on the menu).
But my favorite thing may have been the guacamole, which was really more of a fresh avocado salad, with cilantro and chunks of queso fresco. I could eat it all day.
While Maguire has expressed concern over his prices, while lower than most restaurants still higher than most fast food takeaway, I don't think he has anything to worry about. The food was plentiful, which to me makes it a great value. The $14 half-chicken meal was plenty for two people, making that a pretty good price.
Oh, and Fresa's also serves wine and beer, at barely above retail prices, as well and their own homemade ice cream. Rock on.
