This week in food: National Doughnut Day & a Dr. Seuss-inspired burger
Summer is here and our restaurants are responding accordingly. The approach of a new season often inspires new menus, grand openings and a slew of exciting changes throughout the culinary scene — plus one holiday we can't argue with.
Celebrate National Donut Day with Gourdough’s
Friday is National Doughnut Day, and in honor of the glorious fried pastry, Gourdough’s is hosting a delicious day-long celebration. From 11 am to 12 pm, Gourdough’s will feature a secret menu. To be in the know, Gourdough’s tells diners to check out the Facebook page Friday morning, which is when the secret menu will be released. What’s more, the restaurant/trailer will also feature the Sin-A-Bomb doughnut, made with melted cinnamon butter, sugar and cream cheese icing on special for only $2 all day.
Hopdoddy embraces Dr. Seuss
Hopdoddy has beefed up the summer menu with a massive Green Eggs & Ham Burger ($12) and a refreshing watermelon mojito ($7). Surrounded by a soft egg bun, the literary-inspired burger is prepared with thinly sliced prosciutto, Manchego cheese, a fried farm egg and house-made salsa verde on top of an ample beef patty. Hopdoddy's new mojito is a bright summer libation, prepared with crushed watermelon, fresh mint and hand-squeezed lime juice. The Green Eggs & Ham Burger will be available until Sunday, June 15, so act fast.
Lick adds flavors, locations
Lick Ice Creams has introduced a slew of new summertime flavors on its eclectic menu. Blackberry Lime Basil, Honeyed Peaches & Rosemary, Strawberry Basil, and Lemon Lavender are just a few of the icy treats that have been added to the mix. The all-natural ice cream shop is also working towards opening another store in San Antonio, as well as a few additional Austin locations, owner Chad Palmatier tells CultureMap.
Daily Greens plants its roots
Up-and-coming juice brand Daily Greens is opening its very first juice bar this month. The cold-pressed beverage company, which sells a selection of fruit and vegetable-based drinks will open at 979 Springdale Rd. "We are so happy to be able to showcase our line of organic, cold-pressed juices at our own juice bar co-located at our juice manufacturing facility in East Austin," says Founder Shauna Martin.
Foreign & Domestic tests the breakfast waters
Foreign & Domestic did away with brunch a while back, but it seems the neighborhood restaurant is giving early hours another try. This week, the restaurant announced it will began serving coffee and its signature popovers Monday through Saturday from 7 am - 11 am and Sundays 9 am - 3 pm.
Salt & Time extends dinner hours
Salt & Time will begin staying open an hour later Tuesdays through Thursdays, effectively making the evening business hours 5 pm - 10 pm. Additionally, the popular East Austin butcher shop is hosting a five-course beer-paired dinner with local craft brewery Austin Beerworks on June 15. Stiles Switch switches up menu

The new side dishes are as follows: summer cucumber and tomato salad, fresh watermelon served on a Popsicle stick, dill potato salad and corkscrew pasta salad. The new menu items will be featured alongside the restaurant’s already existing sides.
