One of Austin's highest-profile restaurant groups has plans to expand its presence in Houston. Hai Hospitality will bring Uchiko to the city's Galleria area in 2021, the company announced.
“When we opened Uchi in Houston in 2012, it was our first foray out of Austin,” Hai executive chef and owner Tyson Cole said in a statement. “We love being a part of this Houston community that has been so welcoming and allowed our team to thrive. We couldn’t be more excited for the first expansion of Uchiko to be in Houston.”
Uchiko will occupy approximately 6,000 square feet of Post Oak Place, the five-story, 112,000-square-foot, mixed-use development that Zadok Jewelers is building at 1801 Post Oak Blvd. Like both the development and Uchi's other locations, Austin's Michael Hsu Office of Architecture will handle the design.
“Uchiko gives us more opportunity to expand what we do,” Hai president John Baydale added. “With the expansion of Uchi into Houston, Dallas, Denver, and Miami in 2020, it’s now time for Uchiko to start spreading its wings outside of Austin; and much like Uchi’s first foray, it will be Houston where the second location of Uchiko makes its debut.”
Like its sister restaurant Uchi, Uchiko takes its inspiration from Japanese cuisine, but the restaurant a more casual, farmhouse aesthetic. Raw dishes are available, but the menu includes an expanded selection of non-sushi dishes, including grilled yakitori items.
On the beverage side, the restaurant will offer a full selection of spirits, including a selection of Japanese whiskys.
