New year, new restaurant
Award-winning team behind Emmer & Rye will open new East Austin restaurant in 2023
Emmer & Rye Hospitality Group is adding to its growing list of concepts, and no doubt, future accolades (see Bon Appetit, Esquire, and more). A Mediterranean-inspired restaurant celebrating Israeli cuisine, called Ezov, is slated to open at 2708 E. Cesar Chavez St. in spring 2023.
Executive chef Berty Richter will lead the restaurant, which will mark the eighth concept from the Emmer & Rye group, and Richter's third project as executive chef. His second concept, Ladino, opened in San Antonio's Pearl District earlier this year.
“Ezov will be a fun, lighthearted and vibrant concept, featuring seasonal Israeli cuisine,” says Richter in a release. “The menu will draw inspiration from the markets of Texas and Israel, specifically the Galilee region which is known for its abundance of lush greens, rich agricultural, and diversity of cultures including Druze, Bedouin, Christian and Muslim Arabs who's cuisines and traditions heavily influence the culinary richness of the region. I am excited to explore and showcase the similarities of these culinary traditions with our local culinary, farming and agricultural practices.”
Ezov, which means hyssop in Hebrew, is one of the main ingredients in the spice blend za'atar, a mainstay in Middle Eastern cuisine. Inspired by Tel Aviv nights, the restaurant will offer a seasonal menu of shareable plates to be paired with cocktails and wine, set against a backdrop of bold and vibrant decor from Emmer & Rye partner Rand Egbert.
The Emmer & Rye group is led by award-winning chefs Kevin Fink (Food & Wine's Best New Chef in 2016; 2019 James Beard finalist for Best Chef Southwest and Best Chef Texas in 2020) and Tavel Bristol-Joseph (Food & Wine’s Best New Chef, 2020) —along with Alicynn Fink and Rand Egbert. The group's other celebrated Austin concepts include Emmer & Rye, Hestia, Canje, Kalimotxo, Henbit, and TLV.
