Undergound Hacienda
Swanky basement bar brings extra-creative cocktails to downtown Austin

Bar Hacienda's founders had important roles at Here Nor There.
Industry pros from one of Austin's most respected cocktail bars, Here Nor There, have branched off to open a new lounge in a place of recent interest. Locals can find the new Bar Hacienda in the basement of 400 Colorado St., under the more public-facing Tiger Lilly.
The property has undergone an interesting couple of years. First there was Truluck's, a popular seafood restaurant that completed a relatively high-profile move to another location downtown after more than 20 years at 400 Colorado. Then, Estelle's took the space over, giving it a beautiful makeover and adopting a social-club-for-everyone ethos. Although Estelle's was busy and seemed popular, it only lasted a year and a half before it was replaced by Tiger Lilly.
Now that Bar Hacienda is here, it promises "a dressed-down underground lounge where it’s all flavor, no behavior." "Dressed-down" must be a metaphor, because the dimly lit space is covered in jewel tones, various patterns, and tufted furniture, just like it is upstairs but with even more ideas on display. A press release promises to pair the "unpretentious yet swanky, high-vibe underground lounge" with R&B and hip hop.
Co-founders Terance Robson, who is the creative director, and Jack “Slim” Hogan, the director of operations, have enviable experience in the cocktail world so far. Robson has worked at top bars internationally, and was named the "Best Bartender in Texas" at the 2019 Garrison Brothers Bourbon Brawl. Hogan's bar career began in Dublin and includes helping to open Here Nor There.
Robson's cocktail menu will be served at the bar and at tables, and follows the seasons. For now, it includes:
- The Miami Nice with coconut oil rum, strawberry water, pineapple foam, and lime dust
- The Sunshine Sazerac with mango cognac, banana whiskey, vanilla Peychaud, and watermelon cordial
- The frozen Salero with vodka, mango, vanilla sorbet, freshly squeezed orange juice, and bubbles
Permanent menu items include the Terry’s Chocolate Old Fashioned, a combination of a Terry's Chocolate Orange and an old fashioned, featuring cacao butter bourbon; the Hacienda Highball, primarily mixing mezcal, toasted coconut, and citrus; and Caragigilo, a twist on a Caravaggio with reposado tequila, sweet vermouth, miso, liquor 43 smoke, and spent coffee.
There will be a summer happy hour that's available Tuesdays through Saturdays, from 5-6:30 pm. Guests can choose three signature cocktails for $20.
“Bar Hacienda is the kind of place we’ve always wanted to hang out in — great drinks, good music, no pressure,” said Robson in the release. “It’s about creating a space that’s genuinely fun, where hospitality doesn’t feel forced and flavor leads the way.”
Bar Hacienda is open Tuesdays from 5 pm to midnight, Wednesdays through Saturdays from 5 pm to 1 am, and Sundays from 5 pm to 1 am. No reservations are needed. In the future, Bar Hacienda will add musical "Sunday sessions," pop-ups, and other events.
