New Italian American eats and a classic rock bar amp up Austin food news

Austin restaurants had a quiet couple of weeks to start the year, just to burst onto the scene again with renewed vigor. There's something for every occasion on this list from classic Italian American eats, to a classic rock bar, to heart-shaped cocktails.

Openings and closings

An Italian joint with updated midcentury diner vibes is opening February 3 in Dripping Springs. Cousin Louie’s Italian Restaurant (165 Hargraves Dr., Ste. T100) is helmed by Chef Louis Ciola III, an industry vet who has worked at some of Austin's greatest restaurants and hospitality ventures: Barley Swine, Hestia, Salt & Time, and the Commodore Perry Estate. Blessedly, this menu seems to stick to the Italian American classics. Hours are 11 am to 9 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and 11 am to 10 pm Fridays and Saturdays.

Culture Club, a classic rock-inspired bar, is celebrating its grand opening February 8. The very masculine space (12000 Menchaca Rd. Bldg. 2, Ste. A) has already been open for several weeks, but an all-day event from 11 am to midnight makes it official. Guests can enjoy 50-cent or $1 wings depending on the time of day, specials like buy-4-get-1 domestic beer buckets, and free t-shirts for the first 25 attendees. In its regular service, Culture Club offers artisan pizzas, craft cocktails, vintage pinball games, lawn games, and more. Hours are 4 pm to midnight Mondays through Thursdays, 2 pm to midnight Fridays, and 11 am to midnight Saturdays and Sundays.

Spokesman Coffee is now open in Pflugerville at Crux Climbing Center (18817 N. Heatherwilde Blvd., Bldg. 4). Both businesses have loyal followings, making this a highly anticipated opening since the initial announcement in August 2024. The location is convenient for climbers, but anyone can stop by and enjoy a coffee, local draft, snacks and more. For those hanging out, there's seating at the bar and on the patio. Hours are 7 am to 9 pm Mondays through Fridays, and 8 am to 7 pm Saturdays and Sundays.

Zenon Mexican Restaurant, which recently opened at 5610 N. Lamar Blvd., is getting some praise online from reviewers and users of neighborhood forums. Reviewers report that it's taken over from El Caribe with new owners. The food looks like classic Tex-Mex with lots of shredded cheese, rice and beans, and even French fries. Hours are

ICYMI: February is pre-heating with exciting openings ahead. The acclaimed Micklethwait Barbecue is celebrating its new brick-and-mortar with a grand opening event on February 1. Then two successful restaurateurs are opening new concepts: The proprietor behind La Holly and Taco Flats is soft openingLa Dosis Coffee and Cocktails for newsletter subscribers January 31; and Oribello's, a Filipino sports bar by Sazan Ramen partner Darrel Oribello, is open now.

Other news and notes

OMG Squee, a bakery that lovingly crafts artsy Asian American treats, is celebrating both its fifth birthday and the Lunar New Year on February 8. From 10 am to 4 pm the party includes a lion dance, bakery specials, free drinks, giveaways, Asian food pop-ups, an artist market, and mahjong. Swim Club, the creative bar inside a drained pool at Downright Austin, is putting together a pop-up to celebrate Valentine's Day. From February 7-16, My Neon Valentine at Swim Club will serve a limited-edition, themed menu, decor that's perfect for the occasion, and fun photo ops. Live music on Fridays and Saturdays makes the space extra fun from 7-9 pm. To top it all off, a prix fixe menu on February 14 brings the romance. The Hyatt Regency Hill Country is kicking off Black History Month with a visit from the history-obsessed whiskey brand Uncle Nearest, named for the first-known African American master distiller and owned by the trailblazing Fawn Weaver. A dinner on February 12 at the Antlers Lodge will pair Uncle Nearest whiskeys with five courses like black truffle beef carpaccio topped with Manchego whiskey foam. Tickets ($116.82) are available at hyattexperiences.com.
