Hand over the dough
H-E-B makes room in the freezer for Austin-based cookie dough
There's little better news than news about love and cookies; now, those things are easier than ever for Austin to get at home. Love and Cookies (stylized Love&Cookies), a specialized bakery in Lakeway, was recognized in 2022 by H-E-B for its exceptional frozen doughs. Now that dough is available for purchase.
The contest, called the Quest for Texas Best, is a product-finding mission by the grocery chain. Each year, H-E-B looks to identify the best independent products in the state so it can bring some of them on to the in-store roster. Love and Cookies won first place in 2022 and a $20,000 prize.
According to founder Ashley Cameron, some of the money was donated to the Kawasaki Kids Foundation. The rest went toward developing the brand, which so far is only available at the Lakeway store and now in select H-E-B stores.
Love and Cookies pays attention to holidays and special occasions — recently focusing on several Father's Day designs — and often shares customized bakes on Instagram. But there's no need to wait for a special day just to enjoy a cookie. There are five bake-at-home flavors listed on the H-E-B website for times when you just need a cookie, fast.
The chocolate chip, triple chocolate, and snickerdoodle flavors are straightforward classics. One more unique flavor combines chocolate and vanilla chips with pecan, and another gets adventurous with cranberry, vanilla, pecans, and cinnamon spice. All frozen cookies come pre-portioned for 8 servings, which are ready in 16 minutes with no thawing time.
Other winners that will appear in some stores are I Love Chamoy (sugar-free chamoy), Zwïta (harissa and shakshuka), Four Sixes Ranch (chili mix), and Smokey John’s Bar-B-Que (barbecue rub). Submissions for 2023 are closed, so a new round of winners is not far off.
