Austin's top travel stories of 2023 include treks to the Hill Country and rare sky spectacles
Editor's note: As 2023 comes to a close, we're looking back at the stories that defined Austin this year, and that includes travel — in and out of the Texas capital. Austinites were most interested in getting out into the Hill Country, whether that was through road trips, weekend getaways, or trips to see the solar eclipse. Here are the top 10 travel headlines of 2023.
1. This winding Hill Country road outside Austin was voted one of the best scenic routes in the country. If a long, out-of-state vacation wasn't in the cards for you in 2023, perhaps a short road trip could be a great compromise in 2024.
2. These are the best places to watch Saturday's solar eclipse in Central Texas. Some areas of Texas only got a partial eclipse, but certain cities such as Midland, Odessa, San Antonio, San Angelo, and Corpus Christi got the best viewing experiences. 5. Largest cavern in Texas excavates new tour for explorers near Austin. Texan spelunkers now have a new cave to explore at the state’s largest cavern, located not too far from Austin.

9. New hotel finds a home in the heart of downtown Austin. An 18-story Graduate Austin hotel at the corner of Guadalupe Street and West 18th Street is currently in the works, with an expected opening date in 2025.

Amani, the sole safari tent overlooking a vast expanse at Shaffer Bend Recreation Area, officially opened its reservations in June.
