Coffee Shops

Our favorite Austin coffee shops for sitting, sipping, socializing and even celeb-spotting

Katie Friel
Sep 29, 2014 | 1:32 pm

One of the best parts of working at CultureMap is the inevitable question posed by friends, family and fellow Austinites: "Where should we go?" The answer to that question is usually, "Go to a coffee shop." In addition to finding a great cup of coffee pretty much anywhere, coffee shops are the core of the creative community, a great place to hang out, work and spend time in the community. (It also doesn't hurt that almost all these places serve beer, wine and good food.)

But not all coffee shops are the same. There are certain java joints that are just made for socializing, while others really do let you shut out the world and work. Over years (and we do mean years) of research and multiple visits to each place, we have a go-to list of coffee houses to match our every mood. In honor of both National Coffee Day and the creative community that keeps Austin's coffee shops bustling here are our favorite places to mix, mingle, sip and socialize.

Place to take out-of-towners — Spider House Cafe
As any past and present University of Texas student knows, Spider House is a great place to grab a cup of coffee, order a basket of chips and salsa and hunker down all day. But there is something magical about Spider House at night. Walking up to the little bungalow after dark is like walking into a weird world illuminated with Christmas lights year-round, and everyone just looks happy to be there. For an out-of-towner, Spider House is the perfect way to fall in love with Austin.

Have a downtown meeting people will enjoy — TheHideout Coffeehouse
Even the most important meetings are a little more fun when they're held at the Hideout. In addition to its impressive snack offerings (important to know if your colleague if paying), the Hideout is a far superior alternative to that coffee mega chain just across Congress Avenue.

Where you think you'll get work done, but end up surrounded by friends drinking beer at 2 pm on a Tuesday — Wright Bros Brew & Brew
We always go to the Brew & Brew with the best of intentions, but this East Austin joint is one of those places where you're going to run into pretty much everyone you know. (Even if you don't know anyone, you will make friends, as one peer visiting from New York recently found out.) Come early, order a cortado, and don't be surprised if you end up sipping a beer by lunchtime with your new friends. Don't worry about getting that project done — your boss is probably sitting a few tables over.

Where to actually get work done — Vintage Heart
Just up the street from Brew & Brew, Vintage Heart is a little gem on East Seventh Street. With superb coffee, breakfast tacos from Tacodeli and a quiet ambiance, Vintage Heart is a great place to power up and power through.

Take the kids — Cherrywood Coffeehouse
Cherrywood is the perfect place to pack up the kids (or the pup) and relax on the expansive, tree-covered patio. Order up a Luna taco (you can never go wrong with crispy shoestring potatoes on a taco) or a sandwich with a side of some of the best fries in the city.

Where to take a coffee snob — Cafe Medici on Congress Avenue
As Austin grows, so too does our intolerance for piss-poor coffee. With a host of local roasters and the expansion of major coffee powerhouses like Stumptown into the city limits, the ability to craft an impressive coffee program has never been more important. Though all three Cafe Medici locations have talented baristas and charming atmospheres, the Congress Avenue locale is sleek and stunning, providing the perfect backdrop for your perfect espresso.

Where to pull an all-nighter — Epoch Coffee
Whether it's tax season or a big deadline, there will no doubt come a time when you need a java jolt at 2 am. Lucky for you, Epoch Coffee is open 24 hours a day.

Best place to people watch — Jo's Hot Coffee Good Food on South Congress
Full disclosure, our love of Jo's knows no bounds. In addition to the best people watching in the city, Jo's has it all: Tacodeli tacos, delicious pastries, an expansive patio and a new partnership with Stumptown Coffee. Beware the muffin-stealing grackles, but enjoy the steady stream of celebs wandering over from Hotel San Jose next door. We mean it: Everyone from Karl Rove to Jake Gyllenhaal has stopped by. Oh, and Ryan Gosling is fan.

The coffee shop most likely to give you a hangover — The Buzz Mill
Another 24-hour shop, The Buzz Mill is impossible to describe and must be experienced firsthand. (If this helps clarify, one Yelper aptly wrote, "If Ron Swanson was a bar, he would be The Buzz Mill.") Part Rocky Mountain lodge, part bar/coffee shop, part comedy club, The Buzz Mill does many things well — including getting you pretty hammered.

Where to go to prove South Austin is just as hip as any other neighborhood — Radio Coffee & Beer
Another Stumptown joint, Radio Coffee & Beer opened earlier this year in an eager neighborhood. With a great patio; craft beer offerings; and food from some of Austin's favorite vendors, including Veracruz All-Natural, East Side Pies and Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop, Radio is the kind of joint where you're going to stay a while — so plan accordingly.

Where to take a novice coffee drinker — Monkey's Nest Organic Coffee & Bakery
We don't know any personally, but there are folks out there who just aren't into coffee. Remedy that with a trip to this Burnet Road shop. Offering specialty coffees and enough flavors to give those pumpkin spice latte lovers a run for their money, Monkey's Nest is like a coffee gateway drug. Serious coffee folks will enjoy a simple French press and everyone can appreciate that a large cup of coffee will cost you just $2.19.

Get brunch'd — Cenote
There are no shortage of brunch options in Austin, but if you're like us, sometimes you just want no frills, no fuss — just good food. Housed in a former church, Cenote could easily be our pick for best place to take an out-of-towner, but with options like eggs Benedict, a hearty migas dish and a breakfast sandwich to put others to shame, it's become our go-to casual brunch destination. (Did we mention these dishes are $10 or less?)

Our new favorite gem — Figure 8 Coffee Purveyors
Sure, one could argue this list is a bit heavy on east side joints, but the newest addition to Chicon Street is so darling — and so delicious — that we can't help but fawn over it. Chances are this little gem will become your go-to spot in no time.

A shop without pretense — Once Over Coffee
While we (sorta) understand that not offering Wi-Fi and holding expensive cuppings is serious coffee biz, sometimes you just want an exceptional cup of coffee, a friendly chat with the barista and a place to hide away for a few hours. Once Over is that place. When the weather is great, we hit up the patio and enjoy a made-to-order cup of Joe. When a deadline approaches, we take it inside, slap on our headphones and sip an espresso (or three) to get us through.

SXSW and Rolling Stone magazine team up for new emerging artist showcase in 2023

The series calls attention to influential new artists not just through live performances, but extensive editorial coveage.

Few institutions can curate Austin the way South by Southwest (SXSW) has in its 35 years of programming. Even without the local advantage, Rolling Stone comes close with half a century of experience under its belt. Surprisingly enough, next year will mark the first year the two will enter a formal partnership during the SXSW festival, from March 14-17, 2023.

Showcases (accessible to wristband holders and registrants) are standard fare for the musical festival, which allows companies to participate through booking artists, often in micro-festival formats. There are nearly 200 performers already signed on for 2023 showcases. “The Future 20” is Rolling Stone’s contribution, which starts immediately among the more established showcases at a four-night span, and is already accepted as an annual project. It also booked an almost impossibly great venue: ACL Live at the Moody Theater.

Logistics aside, the real draw is, of course, the expertise behind Rolling Stone’s curation and the reputation it takes to book high-competition acts. In this case, the magazine has tasked its editors, in collaboration SXSW programmers, with choosing its top 20 emerging artists. This group will be international, genre-diverse, and perhaps most useful, introduced in editorial coverage preceding the show.

Nothing’s more exhausting than trying to get all the information on the many SXSW showcases playing in one night, not to mention each performer on the lineup. Audiences are lucky to get a record label bio. Not only will Rolling Stone consolidate all that information, it will tout the special value of each artist in its own voice through interviews, profiles, photos, and social coverage.

“This showcase is inspired by the spirit of SXSW, providing a stage to discover and elevate the next wave of influential artists,” says a press release. “Each night will showcase five acts spanning rock, indie, rap, hip hop, latin, [A]frobeats, R&B, soul, and more, giving fans a high-energy and unique glimpse into the future of music.”

“There is a deep connection between SXSW and Rolling Stone in our shared vision to recognize and highlight the work of rising musical stars,” said Rolling Stone CEO Gus Wenner in the release. “We are proud to give artists the platform to be recognized for their work and to create one more dimension in SXSW’s incredible slate of music programming for years to come.”

The Future 20 showcase is part of a larger initiative following its debut, which serves a similar purpose without the confines of a music festival. The series, called “Future of Music,” includes events as well as editorial coverage, and will be active until the Life is Beautiful festival in Las Vegas.

More information about SXSW, including a list of all currently registered showcases, is available at sxsw.com.

Pink amps up the fun with Summer Carnival 2.0 tour coming to Texas in 2023

Pink will play at the Alamodome in San Antonio on September 25, 2023, as part of her Summer Carnival 2.0 tour.

Grammy Award-winning singer Pink (aka P!nk or P!NK if you prefer) is bringing her Summer Carnival 2.0 tour to three major Texas cities in 2023. Sadly, Austin is not on the list, though we were graced with a gravity-defying performance at ACL Fest 2022, so we must count our blessings. Austinites can catch the tour at San Antonio's Alamodome on Friday, September 25, 2023.

The initial tour announcement includes 21 dates around North America, starting with Toronto, Canada on July 24. All dates will be at Major League Baseball stadiums or similarly large venues.

In addition to the stop in San Antonio, Pink will also play in Houston on September 27 and Arlington on September 29. All Texas dates — at which she'll be joined by Brandi Carlile, Grouplove, and KidCutUp — are post-summer, but who's counting?

This will be Pink's first appearance in the San Antonio area since her Beautiful Trauma World Tour in 2018-2019.

The tour announcement did not come alongside a new album announcement, but there are signs that one is coming soon. Earlier in 2022, she released the protest song "Irrelevant" in part in response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and she just released "Never Gonna Not Dance Again" on November 4.

Pink's last album was 2019's Hurts 2B Human, which was her third straight — and third overall — No. 1 release.

Tickets for the tour go on sale to the general public starting at 10 am Monday, November 21 at LiveNation.com.

Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets beginning 10 am Wednesday, November 16 until 11 pm Sunday, November 20 through the Citi Entertainment program.

Verizon will also offer a presale for select shows in the U.S. through its customer loyalty program, Verizon Up, from 12 pm Thursday, November 17 to 11 pm Sunday, November 20.

Wolf Ranch Revealed

World's largest community of 3D-printed homes moves into Austin suburb with prices from mid-$400s

ICON is bringing the largest community of 3D-printed homes to Georgetown in 2023.

Details have been revealed for a pioneering new housing community taking shape in the Austin area. A new community of 3D-printed homes, first teased in 2021 but with an undisclosed location, will come to Georgetown with reservations beginning in 2023.

Continuing its partnership with Lennar, Austin-based ICON has already broken ground on what will be the largest community of 3D-printed homes in the world.

Just north of Wolf Ranch by Hillwood Communities, another master-planned neighborhood in the Austin suburb, the new 100-home community will feature technologically advanced, environmentally sustainable, and architecturally striking homes with prices starting from the mid-$400,000s.

“We are very pleased to partner with ICON and BIG in building a first-of-its-kind, printed home community that combines innovative designs with sustainable features at an affordable price,” said Stuart Miller, executive chairman of Lennar, in a release. “Given the housing shortage that persists across the country, it has never been more important to innovate in order to find new methods of construction that will enable greater design flexibility and greater production at affordable prices.”

ICON's fleet of Vulcan robotic construction systems, along with cutting-edge software and advanced materials, enable the company to sustainably build new communities at speed and at scale, producing each home with less waste and more design freedom. Co-designed by architectural firm BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group, the new community will feature energy-efficient designs without sacrificing elevated architectural elements, blending contemporary Texas ranch style aesthetics.

“For the first time in the history of the world, what we’re witnessing here is a fleet of robots building an entire community of homes. And not just any homes, homes that are better in every way … better design, higher strength, higher energy performance and comfort, and increased resiliency,” said Jason Ballard, ICON co-founder and CEO, in the release. “In the future, I believe robots and drones will build entire neighborhoods, towns, and cities, and we’ll look back at Lennar’s Wolf Ranch community as the place where robotic construction at scale began. We still have a long way to go, but I believe this marks a very exciting and hopeful turn in the way we address housing issues in the world.”

Offering eight floor plans and 24 unique elevations, the homes will feature three to four bedrooms and two to three baths. Rooftop solar panels will mean each each home is not only sustainably built, but sustainably powered. Security features will include both Lennar's Connected Home package (a Ring Video Doorbell Pro, a Schlage Encode Smart Wi-Fi deadbolt, and a Honeywell Home T6 Pro Wi-Fi smart thermostat) and a Wolf Ranch security package.

“Hillwood Communities is honored that ICON and Lennar chose Wolf Ranch to launch this exciting initiative and we look forward to the positive impact it will bring to the homebuilding industry,” said Fred Balda, president of Hillwood Communities, in a release. “This innovative approach aligns with Hillwood’s long history of elevated design and the thoughtful development approach we take to ensure a higher standard of living for the residents of our communities."

New homeowners in the 3D-printed community at Wolf Ranch will also enjoy all the amenities of the neighborhood, including pools, recreational trails and parks, and the short drive to downtown Austin.

“We are excited to welcome Lennar and ICON's cutting-edge home construction technology to Georgetown,” Georgetown Mayor Josh Schroeder said in the release. “The Georgetown community prides itself on honoring our past and innovating for our future, and we are eager to see the future being built right here.”

Reservations begin in 2023, and interested homebuyers can join the interest list at Lennar.com.
