Navigating Amplify Austin: Your 24-hour chance to give back to the community
I Live Here, I Give Here's Amplify Austin kicks off at 6 pm Thursday with its biggest goal yet: to raise $7 million in just 24 hours.
Now in its third year, Amplify Austin has raised more than $8.5 million for local nonprofits. Over the course of the day-long event, organizations "compete" for donations, creating engaging campaigns and, in some cases, partnering with corporations or companies to have those donations matched. (For example, St. David's Foundation has already committed to matching $1 million to their nonprofit partners.)
Ultimately, it's a festival of giving — and a chance for Austinites to show their support for the local nonprofits making our city a better place to live. Beginning at 6 pm on Thursday, follow along on the leaderboard to see where your favorite nonprofits rank.
What nonprofits are involved?
Currently, 514 nonprofits are registered for Amplify Austin in categories ranging from Animal Welfare to Victim Services. A full list of participating groups can be found here.
These nonprofits will compete for four awards that come with a $5,000 prize. The categories are: most money raised before midnight on March 5, most money raised by a small nonprofit, most money raised by a large nonprofit, and highest number of individual fundraisers.
How can I donate?
If it's before 6 pm on Thursday, Amplify Austin has an option to schedule your donation here. After 6 pm on Thursday through 6 pm on Friday, donations can be made here. Amplify Austin urges donors to use the hashtag #amplifyATX to raise awareness — and maybe convince your social media followers to donate, too.
Is there a minimum donation?
Amplify Austin suggests a minimum donation of $25, but they do allow donations as small as $10.
Is this tax deductible?
Yup. All donations are tax deductible and donors will receive an emailed receipt. Rest assured that the donation will be in the hands of your specific charity within four weeks.
Can I make my donation in person?
Many participating nonprofits will be hosting live watch parties. On Thursday, support Texas Performing Arts at its Rock Amplify event in the Bass Concert Hall Lobby from 5-7 pm. Autism Society of Central Texas' Amplify Autism will be held at Aloft Austin at the Domain from 5-7 pm. Austin Dog Rescue will be hosting an event at Uncle Billy's Brew & Cue on Barton Springs Road from 5-8 pm.
And those are just a handful of the events around town. Check in with your favorite nonprofits to see where they will be Amplifying Austin this year.
But why?
Austin's culture of generosity and emphasis on locality makes this a uniquely Austin event. Plus, sometimes it just feels good to do something nice.
