Officer involved in fatal shooting in Central Austin
Police say a man was shot and killed by a detective under the bridge near Shoal Creek and 35th Street on Friday, July 26. It happened after officers say the man tried to enter a bank that was closed for an armed robbery investigation.
Around 8:19 am, just minutes after opening for business, a white male wearing an oxygen mask and carrying a weapon walked into the Benchmark Bank on North Lamar demanding money. The man ran off with the cash, and Austin detectives arrived to investigate.
Hours later, police were still on the scene when they say a black male walked up to the bank and tried to open the locked doors.
“The suspect walked away for a minute and then came back to the front door. He attempted to open the door again,” said assistant police chief Brian Manley.
Manley says a bank manager stepped outside to try and speak with the man, and “the individual identified himself in a manner in which the bank manager recognized was not an accurate identification."
The manager told a detective inside that there was someone suspicious trying to get in, and police say the detective spoke with the man for a few minutes outside. Manley says that’s when “the individual, for unknown reasons, got up and took off running."
The detective chased after him, and police say they started fighting underneath the Shoal Creek Bridge several hundred feet away from the bank. “During the struggle, the detective discharged his weapon, and the suspect is deceased as a result,” said Manley.
Police confirm the man shot and killed by the detective is not the same man who robbed the bank earlier on Friday.
