Name: Billy Joe Shaver

Featured track: "Georgia On A Fast Train"

Genre: Alt-country

City of origin: Waco, Texas

In one sentence: Shaver is the man behind the songs on Waylon Jennings' Honky Tonk Heroes, largely considered the first true outlaw album.

Why we chose him: You don't get to listen to legendary outlaw songwriting of this caliber every day — even if the songwriter does hale from just up the road in Waco, Texas. Plus, on this trip to Austin, Billy Joe Shaver plays at Shotguns, an aptly named venue for this Central Texas rebel. (If you don't know what we're talking about, take a quick listen to Dale Watson's "Where Do You Want It," a song based on Shaver's infamous watering hole scuffle in Lorena, Texas.)

SXSW official showcase: 11 pm on Wednesday, March 12 at Shotguns
