Weekend Picks
Ditching the fest? 8 more things to do this weekend that don't involve ACL
It's Austin City Limits music festival weekend ... again! For those of you not fest-ing it up this weekend, here are few things you can check out that have nothing to do with ACL or Zilker Park.
Ditch the Fest Fest
Okay, so maybe you do want to fest it up a little bit. On Saturday, October 11, there’s an alternative festival: Ditch the Fest Fest at Empire Control Room & Garage. The lineup is stacked (we're talking Marmalakes, Slomo Drags, Holiday Mountain, Speak, Growl and many, many more) — plus entrance only costs $5.
Independence Brewing Co.'s 10th Anniversary Party
Can you believe it? Independence Brewing Co. is turning ten years old on Saturday and it's celebrating with live music, barbecue and the release of a special tenth anniversary barleywine ale. Your ticket gets you a special commemorative glass and three free beer samples. If you're still thirsty, beer is available for purchase for $4, so make sure to bring extra cash.
Shop at the Austin Flea
Think of the Austin Flea as a recurring fancy flea market — your one-stop shop for the best handmade and vintage goods from some of Austin's most talented vendors. Browse through a selection of jewelry, glasswork, clothing, artwork, paper goods, textiles and more. The mini market returns to Opal Divine's Penn Field location on Saturday, October 11.
Dig In! Archeology Day at the French Legation Museum
If you're looking for something family-friendly, then get your hands dirty during Archeology Day on Saturday, October 11. This free event gives kids (and adults) the chance to learn about archeology through hands-on experiences including a mock dig, pottery puzzles and a chance to set up your own museum exhibit.
Hops & Grain's Third Anniversary Celebration
And another local brewery is having a birthday! Hops & Grain is celebrating their third anniversary with a "Sunday Funday" party. Sit back, listen to some live music, enjoy food from Slab BBQ. The brewery will be offering more than nineteen beers to taste, including the latest edition to its permanent lineup: a Baltic porter called PorterCulture.
Be a part of The Show! Austin
The Show! is Austin’s late night talk show where local filmmakers screen their latest projects in front of a live audience. Comedian and radio personality Charlie F'N Hodge will be your host and all the filmmakers will be forced — ahem — invited to chat with with him. This Sunday's flicks include: Rack, First Date, People with Issues (new episode), Perils in Nude Modeling and Ol' Daddy.
See Ringo Starr or Against Me! in concert
Does Ringo Starr need an introduction? No. And if you're a Ringo or Beatles fan, then you probably already have tickets to their show on Sunday. But if you don't, tickets are still available as of Friday morning. If punk is more your speed, Against Me! is playing at Stubb's on Sunday as well. Before you hit the show, catch up on lead singer Laura Jane Grace's AOL series True Trans which premiered on October 10.
