Ruby Jane Smith does TV interview post-carjacking, speaks on benefit concerts instore
Ruby Jane Smith appeared on KXAN this morning to tell the tv stations audience about the benefit concerts she will be playing both Saturday night and in January.
It must be strange to talk about a concert to benefit oneself, but nationally renowned local musician Smith — recent victim of a carjacking in Houston that saw her lose all of her valuable instruments — couldn't have been any more gracious or well-spoken.
When Smith was asked to recount the traumatic event on the live television segment, she gave a concise but detailed description from her mother's screams to their subsequent compliance.
It's no wonder that established Austin superstars like Lawrence Wright and Ray Benson are stepping forth to help usher Smith out of the stress of this event and into a more positive immediate future.
Before the carjacking, Smith already had a show on the books with WhoDo for Saturday the 17th, a band that features Wright. Once Wright got word of what teenage Smith and her mother went through this past weekend, he quickly reworked their show into a benefit concert to help recoup the cost of the equipment lost. Benson is organizing a more official benefit of sorts in January.
The Smiths' car was recently found in a Jack in the Box parking lot and her guitar (a gift from a fan) was recovered from a dumpster. Still missing are her mandolin and fiddle — the instruments Smith's fame is built upon. Despitethe fact that the crime took place in an upscale Houston neighborhood, the Smiths suspect the robbery was gang related and were told a crime of this sort happens every six years or so in the area.
Despite the losses, Smith maintains an outwardly positive attitude. Post-interview, she told CultureMap how "surreal" the experience was and how lucky she felt when the carjacking and robbery ended. "I was just glad when it was over… like, 'Oh, he's driving off…,' because I didn't know if we were going to get out of there."
