Spooky Screens
Austin drive-in rolls out bewitching Halloween movie experiences for downtown and Mueller
Scary movies are just different at the drive-in. It’s all the camp, or all the exposure outside those car windows. Maximizing on this, Austin's Blue Starlite drive-in is rolling out its 13th annual Halloween specials.
Known for its creative and scenic locations, the Blue Starlite is working with three different partnerships for this year's spook fest. Hyperreal Film Club, Capital Cruises, and Phantom Fest are taking the reins for this holiday programming, bravely facing rated-R horror films as well as family-friendly classics.
Hyperreal presents Return of the Living Dead and Killer Klowns from Outer Space, two '80s films that embrace the silliness of the horror genre. The film club has a proclivity for campy classics and rare new takes for a hipster curation style that’s simultaneously edgy and approachable. It works in an ongoing partnership with the drive-in to curate shows for the Blue Starlite Hyperreal Courtyard Cinema in Mueller, which takes advantage of a “secret courtyard garden” space.
Benefiting the SIMS Foundation, iPhantom Fest is a multimedia Halloween celebration across Austin including happy hours, karaoke, and costume parties. Its partnership with the Blue Starlite will set films across the drive-in’s Mueller screens. It’s mysterious, alright — so far, aside from a mention in a press release, none of the schedule has been announced or even teased.
Capitol Cruises, a new ongoing partner of the Blue Starlite, operates a monthly cruise that’s more of a boat-in on Lady Bird Lake, as well as a shoreside screen. Grown-up '90s kids and anyone who came next will enjoy Hocus Pocus and Beetlejuice on the dock, and the newly released Pearl brings real chills. Beetlejuice is showing on the cruise on October 19.
The flashiest and most recognizable Blue Starlite screens perch on top of a downtown parking garage on San Antonio Street, giving skyline views and a uniquely urban drive-in experience. A new release screen at the garage brings 2022’s Halloween Ends, starting on October 14 (which is also available on Mueller screens).
More Halloween programming by the Blue Starlite alone brings together Scooby Doo and Charlie Brown in a double-feature, plus The Addams Family. A “fog series” in the woods adds intrigue to The Fog and other titles. The Blue Starlite maintains a commitment to show new movies (with at least three 2022 titles in its Halloween programming).
The onsite food truck is also getting in the spirit with the Texas Chainsaw BBQ Brisket dog with pastrami from New York’s Carnegie Deli. A vegetarian falafel dog ensures that everyone can enjoy the theater snacks.
Halloween at the Blue Starlite begins now and continues through October 31. Check bluestarlitedrivein.com for show times.
