Austin brewery introduces signings and storytime for 2026 book fair
Lagers and Literature is returning in September.
The always-buzzing South Austin brewery Meanwhile Brewing Co. is setting the scene for a special fifth anniversary of its annual adult book fair with new local author signings, flash tattoos, and more. This year, the event's main beneficiary also needs help overcoming significant new literacy barriers.
The 2026 Lagers and Literature book fair will bring together local businesses, nonprofits, and independent book shops on Sunday, September 6, from 11 am to 4 pm.
The event has served as a longstanding partnership between the brewery and local nonprofit Inside Books Project, which sends books to prisoners in Texas. The brewery has been hosting weekly book swaps and a book drive for the organization all summer long, and avid readers who have filled their book swap punch cards can redeem them for prizes during the event.
Inside Books is navigating challenges this year that the nonprofit warned could have shut it down entirely, but so far it's still making things work.
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) majorly tightened its restrictions on donated books on April 1, 2026. It now only accepts accept paperback books in new condition — no hardcover or visibly used books, except for donations from one school district. Inside Books also says TDCJ will now only accept new-condition magazines, disqualifying those that have a delivery address covered in marker or cut out.
TDCJ says its new restrictions are to reduce the entry of "contraband, including drugs," but the new policy dramatically slows the number of books coming in, at least through Inside Books. The nonprofit told Chron, the sister site to the Houston Chronicle, that approximately 80 percent of its donations going into the change were hardcover or used books. This is on top of an existing content restriction that, as Chron summarizes, is "so broad that it encompasses everything from map books to classics of children's literature."
Though Lagers and Literature has a serious goal, fun and family-friendly events get people through the door and broaden the festival's literacy goals to include children and even the average Austinite, who can find niche, theoretical, and technical books through many of the participating sellers.
New this year, BookPeople will present book signings from three local authors throughout the afternoon:
- 12 pm – Deb Olin Unferth, author of Earth 7, Barn 8, and more
- 1 pm – Lauren Hough, journalist and author of Leaving Isn’t the Hardest Thing and Monster of a Land
- 3 pm – Robert Jackson Bennett, author of The Ana and Din Mysteries, The Founders Trilogy, The Divine Cities Trilogy, and more
Children’s literacy nonprofit BookSpring will also host a new bilingual children’s storytime during the event. BookSpring has existed for more than 50 years and even has its own original books. Many of Austin's breweries tend to be family-friendly, but none more so than Meanwhile, which has a playground and a new soft serve ice cream truck that can buy parents 20-plus more minutes of peace.
Finally, Slowpoke Tattoo will also be on-site for the first time for bookish-themed flash tattoos.
The brewery will take the occasion to release its seasonal Bookworm beer, a 4.5 percent ABV coffee cream ale that features "coffee, bread and floral notes." A portion of the proceeds from every Bookworm sold will be donated to Inside Books Project and The Library Foundation.
