Austin Fashion Week
Beauty, creativity & talent collide for Austin Fashion Week kickoff party atCowboy Harley-Davidson
Looking at the crowd at Saturday night's Austin Fashion Week Kickoff Party, you would never know Austin was ranked the 18th worst-dressed city in America. Heels, designer dresses and colorful updos replaced flip flops and t-shirts. Even the venue, Cowboy Harley-Davidson, underwent its own transformation from motorcycle showroom to lavish party setting.
There was no shortage of attractive people and whimsical fashion to take in while walking around the two story building, picking up some drinks and a few lite bites along the way. Whether upstairs or down it was impossible to miss the long sleek runway at the center of the showroom playing host to the work of some of Austin's best designers.
The evening included two runway shows showcasing New York designer Betsey Johnson and MotorClothes by Harley-Davidson. As you might expect this show was full of over the top designs, teased hair and lots of leather. One of the male models showcased buttless leather chaps in a surprisingly tasteful way.
Appropriately so, the two shows were separated by a live performance from LC Rocks, one of Austin's most well known '80s cover bands. After jamming to "You Give Love A Bad Name" and "Jessie's Girl" it was back to the runway for the most anticipated portion of the night - the Mashup Team Runway Show.
Mash Up Teams are made up of makeup artists, hair stylists, designers and photographers. Chosen at random they are tasked with creating a fashion portrait. You can see and vote on all the portraits online but they came to life Saturday night.
You would never catch me sporting any of the looks showcased, I'm just not that cool, but I could see many of my fashion forward friends mimicking the school girl look by Redifine Time, the sleek look of Feisty Couture, or the unbelievably adorable look for kids by 40.
While there were a few hiccups along the way, the show proved there are a lot of talented, creative, and beautiful people in Austin.
Yes, Austin may be a flip flop and t-shirt wearing town on a worst dressed list, but Saturday night confirmed we clean up well.
