Red-hot biscuit and doughnut shop bakes up first Austin outpost
Hot on the heels of artisan jam maker Stephanie McClenny opening Confituras Little Kitchen and the announcement that Thunderbird Coffee is bringing Bird Bird Biscuit to Manor Road comes news of another biscuit shop popping up in Austin. North Carolina eatery Rise Biscuits and Donuts has revealed an opening date for its first Austin location at 2522 Guadalupe St. in the former home of Fuzzy’s Taco Shop.
Although the expansion was previously announced in early fall, a company rep shared with CultureMap that they are now projecting to be open as early as March (barring any hiccups with Austin’s notoriously slow permitting process, of course).
The franchise has received positive press over the years from heavyweights like Garden & Gun for its chef-driven approach to fast casual cuisine. As the name implies, the restaurant is all about two of America’s most popular pastries.
For breakfast, patrons can expect buttermilk biscuit sandwiches topped with crispy chicken, sausage and fried egg, fried green tomatoes, or huevos rancheros. For lunch, the toppings switch over to chicken and cheese, buffalo chicken, or all the fixings of a BLT (with Duke’s mayo, of course — they aren’t playing).
The doughnuts run the gamut from classic offerings like rainbow sprinkles, apple fritters, and cinnamon twists to newfangled varieties like a bruleed doughnut with custard filling and a maple bacon bar. There’s also a salad option, but let’s be serious, you are going to go straight for the carbs.
Although the Allen, Texas location failed to take hold, we suspect that was due to a poor location and lack of indoor seating. The Austin shop will have a spacious dining room and a patio, and proximity to the University of Texas campus. Like its other locations, Rise will likely be open only in the daytime hours, between 7 am-2 pm.
