The Golden Egg
Neighborhood bar from J. Black's owner to take over iconic Horseshoe Lounge space
The Horseshoe Lounge shuttered the doors of its longtime South Lamar spot in February, but a new watering hole will move into the famed space in May.
The Golden Goose, a new bar from Jason Steward (Bungalow and Bar 2211) and Sean Fric (J. Black's Feel Good Kitchen & Lounge), hopes to maintain the space's vintage vibe with neon signs, a jukebox — and a straightforward bar menu.
"We plan to keep it simple. You'll find great music, ice-cold beer, well-made cocktails and a friendly staff," said Sean Fric in a press release on Monday. Steward and Fric — who met opening the original Eddie V's 15 years ago — were frequent visitors to the Horseshoe Lounge and are honored to take over a space with so much history.
"As an Austin native, South Lamar has been a huge part of my life," Steward said. "It's my goal to keep the area's roots alive and well amongst all the change and growth." In honor of its predecessor, The Golden Goose will have a custom shuffleboard table and hopes to provide the same neighborhood vibe that Horseshoe Lounge nurtured for five decades.
Horseshoe Lounge announced just last month that its new location is set to open this summer on Riverside Drive. The reincarnation of this old Austin staple will feature liquor, a stage, more parking and the iconic shuffleboard table.
The Golden Goose is scheduled to open in May.
