Baking for Good
Local community fires up ovens this weekend for Austin Bakes for West fundraiser
In the past few weeks, we’ve heard some heartwarming stories about Central Texans banding together to help victims of the horrible West, Texas fertilizer plant explosion. This weekend, home bakers and local businesses alike will fire up their ovens to bake up tasty treats for the citywide Austin Bakes for West bake sale. The sale will be held Saturday, May 4 at eight locations throughout town.
The bake sale is modeled after Austin Bakes for Bastrop and Austin Bakes for Japan, which were both organized by a community of food bloggers and local citizens following the wildfires and tsunami of 2011 and raised nearly $12,000 and $14,000 for both causes respectively. The fundraising goal for this weekend’s Austin Bakes for West is $15,000, and head organizer Kathryn Hutchison is optimistic about achieving it.
“It’s been amazing that pretty much the same group of people have worked together on these bake sales over the past few years,” says Hutchison. “Only about a quarter of us are food bloggers, and the rest are Austinites who just want to do something useful. It’s really amazing to be a part of a community like this.”
Over 80 home cooks and dozens of local businesses will be contributing baked goods including kolaches, cookies, cupcakes, brownies, pies and pastries of all kinds. Several home bakers are creating Texas-themed confections for the sale, while others will be baking locally sourced, organic, vegan or gluten-free items. In addition, customers may purchase gourmet pastries that have been donated by Austin bakers and restaurants including Crema Bakery, Bellissimo Bakery, Contigo restaurant, Easy Tiger, Greenling, Whole Foods, the Pie Society, Sugar Circus and more.
