New barbecue tour samples East Austin faves with help from pitmasters

Chef Kareem El-Ghayesh will give visitors an inside look at his own trailer, KG BBQ, and other barbecue joints.
Love brisket but hate the wait? A new barbecue tour from Eastside ATX Magazine lets locals skip the lines and savor some of Austin’s best smoked meats. Dubbed the Locals Know BBQ Food Tour, the three-hour VIP experience stops at five barbecue joints in Central East Austin every Saturday and Sunday.
Kicking off at 10:45 am, the tour includes lines-free access to Michelin-starred La Barbecue, Micklethwait Craft Meats, KG BBQ, Mum Foods, and Parish BBQ. Capped at 11 people per tour, the itinerary also teases a sweet surprise treat at the end of the experience.

Tickets also include transportation and little-known behind-the-scenes stories about each barbecue joint, courtesy of the pitmasters themselves. A press release promises tidbits from Ali Clem of la Barbecue, Kareem El-Ghayesh of KG BBQ, and Tom Micklethwaite of Micklethwait Craft Meats.
Chef El-Ghayesh will even lead the tour as a special guest on Sunday, July 6. The pitmaster has stacked up numerous accolades following the 2022 debut of his Egyptian-inspired barbecue truck, including a James Beard Award nomination and a Michelin Bib Gourmand designation for KG BBQ in 2024.
Tickets are $145 and include tastings at all five barbecue joints and non-alcoholic beverages. Guests can opt to add on a $35 "boozy bonus" drink package, featuring signature drinks at the participating barbecue joints. The tours will happen every weekend this summer, rain or shine.
