Austin Free Week
First wave of Austin Free Week lineup unveiled: Our picks for can't-miss acts
It is a truth universally acknowledged that every Austinite loves a free show. Thankfully for us, some of the best local venues are once again teaming up with local artists to present Austin Free Week, a 10-day celebration featuring 150 free live music events from January 1-10, 2015.
The point of Free Week is to get you out of your post-holiday slump and into some of the city's best music venues. Red River Cultural District staples Holy Mountain, The Mohawk and Red 7, the driving forces behind this yearly celebration, have released their 2015 lineups.
Below, we highlight the can't-miss acts that have been released so far.
Holy Mountain
This two-year-old venue has stacked lineups every night of Free Week, but there are a few evenings of music that particularly stand out. Enjoy an electric country folk array on Friday, January 2 with Sweet Spirit, A. Sinclair, Harvest Thieves, Little Radar and Borrisokane.
Saturday, January 3 brings a more plugged-in group with synth-laden dance trio Holiday Mountain, hard blues rock band Not in the Face, pubescent punks Residual Kid and indie pop troupe Zettajoule.
Side One Track One, Hip Hip Hooray and KOOP 91.7 are teaming up on Sunday, January 4 for a show with Crew54, Magna Carda, P-Tek, Scuar and Table Manners Crew. Then treat yourself to a midweek break and check out some fast-paced punk with Hundred Visions and Ghetto Ghouls and the more mellow Milezo on Tuesday, January 6.
Red 7
Red 7 has a wide range of genres ready for January. Start off Free Week with a good metal thrashing from Pack of Wolves, Curse the Heavens and Illustrations on Thursday, January 1. In contrast, Xander Harris hits the stage on Friday, January 2 with his dark, atmospheric synth music. Psych rockers Think No Think and the buoyant La Migra bring the mood back up on Tuesday, January 6.
If you're looking for a good rap show, check out Young B, Die Slo, World Wide and more on Thursday, January 8. Then finish up your 10-day free music spree with post-rock tunes and a tinge of psychedelia from long-time Austin band My Education on Saturday, January 10.
The Mohawk
Another good start to your Free Week would be a laid-back evening with Good Field, El Campo and The Deer at The Mohawk on Friday, January 2.
This Red River venue offers two shows on Saturday, January 3: Afrobeat collective Hard Proof take over one stage with indie rock openers The Eastern Sea; effects-heavy Future Death and the equally experimental BLXPLTN take over the other.
On Wednesday, January 7, round out your hump day with garage pop from Alex Napping, Brooklyn natives Taft and hometown heroes Major Major Major. Then, wrap up Free Week with some dreamy rock tunes from Black Books on Friday, January 9.
Additional venues
These venues aren't the only ones packing heat on Free Week. Other great shows announced so far include Young Tounge at The Parish, Total Unicorn and Aviateur at The North Door, The Well at Swan Dive and a stacked lineup atStubb's with Goove Think, Transcontinental Trip, The Digital Wild and Opposite Day.
