MeadowFest
Grupo Fantasma, Superfónicos headline festival in memory of teen Austin musician
In most cases, it's a pretty safe bet that attending a live music performance will improve your mental health. In this case, it'll help others, too. On Saturday, August 24, Austinites are invited to practice that more intentionally at MeadowFest, a benefit show at the Far Out Lounge in memory of Meadow Goodman.
Meadow was the 15-year-old daughter of local musician Greg Goodman and his wife, Lulu. Meadow struggled with mental illness and died by suicide in August 2023. A year later, her family and supporters want to use their grief to contribute to the work of mental health and suicide prevention organizations around the United States.
The mini-fest, presented by KUTX, will feature performances by local acts Grupo Fantasma, Superfónicos, Como Las Movies with Sabrina Ellis of a Giant Dog, Nemegata, The Point, Somebody Someone, and School of Rock. Most of these groups have a strong Latin or psychedelic undercurrent, and a few have both.
Some vendors will be onsite, including nonprofits tabling to spread their messages. After event expenses, estimated at $35,000, are covered, all the profits will be split by Out Youth Austin and the Sims Foundation, for providing LGBTQIA+ safe spaces and strengthening mental health in the local music industry, respectively. This combination honors Meadow's experience as a queer musician, and the musicians playing the show will receive honorarium pay.
A release shares a quote by Greg Goodman from an Austin American-Statesman story from October 2023: "If you're uncomfortable in this world, there are all kinds of resources for you, and [you] shouldn't be afraid to reach out to those resources. Talk to a friend. Talk to other peers. Talk to adults. You need to talk to someone."
There are several ways to donate:
- General admission tickets are $25 on presale, $30 online, and $35 at the door
- VIP tickets ($100) include access to a private indoor area, plus a bar and catering by Eldorado Cafe
- Sponsorships from $500-5,000 are available
- A GoFundMe campaign organized by Greg Goodman is collecting additional donations
Beyond raising funds, organizers hope that this event will spread joy to community members. "Meadow's light continues to shine through the spirit of caring and the joy of Austin music," the release promises.
Doors for MeadowFest open at 6:30 pm; The event runs from 7 pm to midnight at the Far Out Lounge (8504 S. Congress Ave.). More information is available at kutx.org.
