Spring fever
8 hot Austin restaurants springing with new happy hour deals
After spending hours going over spreadsheets and taking in meeting after meeting, it’s only natural that you want a good, strong drink. And it’s even better when you can get them on the cheap. From bustling downtown eateries to hip east side haunts, these eight Austin hot spots are offering happy hour deals that are sure to help you get through the week.
Guild
This seafood-focused newcomer is playing the dozens with a specially priced menu available on weekdays from 5-6:30 pm. Choose 12 chef-selected oysters (served with horseradish, chili, and mignonette) or a mixed dozen olives (including buttery Castelvetrano and nutty Picholine) to accompany a selection of discounted drinks, including three wines; three Texas beers; and six cocktails like Real Playa’s Sunrise with tequila, pineapple juice, and Luxardo syrup.
Il Brutto
With its stately oak-shaded patio and prime East Sixth Street location, this new Italian restaurant has already become a favorite of the see-and-be-seen crowd. Expect it to be even more hopping now that it has added a weeknight happy hour from 5-7 pm. The deals at Il Brutto were only originally available at the bar and cocktail tables, but now are available in the entire restaurant — not that we minded squeezing in.
Jo’s Coffee — Second Street District
You probably think of Jo’s as a place to go in the morning to fuel up with a latte and breakfast taco before work or to relax for a Sunday brunch, but you should also be visiting in the evening hours. Between 4-8 pm, enjoy $7 glasses of Prosecco, $6 select wines, $5 draft beer, and $5 frosé — not to mention superb people-watching.
Mattie’s
Enjoy spring’s sunny weather (and see the occasional preening peacock) on the Austin mainstay’s beautiful lawn, where you can enjoy nightly specials between 5-7 pm. The curated menu offers a $2 discount on three cocktails (the Bacchus Cup is particularly refreshing) or glasses of sparkling, rosé, or red house wine. Pair it with tangy pimento cheese made from Irish cheddar or a heavenly buttermilk biscuit.
Max’s Wine Dive
The math is easy at Max’s Six by Six Happy Hour, one of the longest in town. Small plates like spinach artichoke dip, bone marrow popcorn, and the crazy good nine cheese chili mac ball are all $6. Select wines covering all the bases from light and bubbly to big and bold are also $6. And the whole menu is available from opening time until, you guessed it, 6 pm.
Second Bar + Kitchen
Even after almost eight years in business, this hip downtown retreat still has one of Austin’s most bustling bars. Skip out of work early to enjoy its new daily happy hour from 4-6 pm featuring $2 off snacks like black truffle pommes frites and buffalo fried pickles, pizzas like the perpetually popular Black + Bleu, wines, draft beer, and mixed drinks from cocktail guru Jason Stevens.
Sway
To celebrate the introduction of its cocktail program, this contemporary Thai restaurant has launched a lengthy happy hour Monday-Friday, 3-6 pm. New sippers like the Bangkok 75 (gin, Secret Garden tea, lemon, sparkling wine); Same Same Tonic (gin, galangal, lime, tonic); and Lotus Margarita (tequila, Combier, tamarind, lime salt) are all $2 off.
Yoshi Ramen
From 2-5 pm on Monday through Thursday, this cool Hancock hangout’s happy hour is perfect for people who enjoy a late lunch. Take a buck off everything on the menu: crispy bao sliders, shoyu ramen, ramen burgers, donburi bowls, as well as bubble tea, sake, champagne cocktails, and draft beer.
