Stay Forever 21
Adults take over children's museum every month at Thinkery21
When the Austin Children’s Museum left downtown to reopen in the Mueller development, it may have rebranded itself the Thinkery, but it kept its mission to educate young and curious minds.
At the Thinkery, just because you're not in school doesn't mean your education should stop. And that’s the basic idea behind Thinkery21, a special monthly event that caters to the young at heart.
Since opening its doors in December 2013, the interactive museum has held Thinkery21 (roughly) every second Thursday of the month. While normal exhibits and activities attempt to teach kids the basics of a “STEAM” education — science, technology, engineering, art and math — the special 21 and up event is meant to engage adults who just want to have fun.
In fact, this month’s Thinkery21 is all about “Fun and Games,” offering a unique opportunity to play indie video games. For the musically inclined, guests can test out Cosmic DJ, an interactive music game that allows players to create their own tunes on the spot. Or you can take part in some fast-paced, multiplayer action with Capsule Force, created by the Austin-based Klobit Games.
Guest can also awaken their inner child with the “Big Games” scattered throughout the Thinkery. Compete against other attendees in giant versions of chess, 3D Twister and other classic games.
If chowing down is more your thing, Thinkery21 has hands-on exhibits designed to let you play with your food. Komé, the popular Airport Boulevard sushi restaurant, will host several fun events exploring the art of sushi. Learn how to create your own rolls or enjoy a sake tasting with Komé chefs. Prove you're a master by testing your sushi knowledge with trivia at the Thinkery’s Kitchen Lab and test your dexterity with the “Chopstick Challenge.”
After you've worked up an appetite, sample delicious treats from WunderPig BBQ or cool off with some Candanosas Snowballs, all the while enjoying a cash bar.
