Getting Down at Upside
East Austin hotel's free rooftop movie series lifts curtain on fall 2019 lineup

While the rest of the country bemoans the end of summer, here in Austin it's time to come out of our air-conditioned hobbit holes and return to civilization. Amid a packed fall social schedule (hello, festival season!) it's also the best time of year for community-themed events, beginning with East Austin Hotel's Upside Cinema, a new outdoor movie series.
Beginning Thursday, September 5, and running through December, the new east side spot is partnering with Vulcan Video to host free films every Thursday. Screenings begin at 8:30 pm at the hotel's The Upside rooftop lounge, and the event is open to the public with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The September "Rock 'N' Roll" series kicks off with Phantom of Paradise on September 5, followed by Streets of Fire on September 12, Times Square on September 19, and FM September 26.
In celebration of the new film series, East Austin Hotel will also offer drink and snack deals throughout the night. Moviegoers can enjoy $2 off appetizers, $2 off house cocktails and wines by the glass, and $1 off draft beer beginning at 4 pm and running through the evening. All-night happy hour specials will also be offered at the hotel's restaurant, Sixth and Waller, and Pool Bar.
Though Upside Cinema hasn't released exact films yet, it has released the themes for the remaining months. October's "Multiple Maniacs" will feature "a Halloween-themed salute to the murderous maniacs." In a nod to Movember, November's "Macho Mustached Men" will highlight some of the finest mustaches ever to be recorded on film while December's "Horrible Holidays" theme promises to showcase the things we love to hate about the holidays.
With the exception of Halloween (Thursday, October 31) and Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 28), Upside Cinema will run every Thursday through 2019.
