18 hot new restaurants to try in Austin right now

With new offerings now a constant, Austin’s restaurant scene can be a challenge to keep up with. From food trailer finds to new drinking destinations, it seems that every week brings at least one new interesting option to town.

To help catch you up on the city’s latest offerings, we’ve compiled this list of new and notable restaurants around town that opened in the last 90 days.

Al Fico
Several years in the making, this second restaurant from the Vino Vino team focuses on old-school Italian trattoria fare. Chef Clinton Bertrand (Vespaio) leads the kitchen, which produces Roman-style pizza, pasta dishes, and meat and fish main courses. An all-Italian wine list features heavily in the drink program. Kendall Melton (Contigo, Sugar Mama’s) is the pastry chef.

Burn
Bridget Dunlap’s newest spot is a pizza joint. Burn focuses on Roman-style pizza with thin crust and burned edges — thus the name. There are also pasta dishes and snacks like caprese salad and fried artichokes on the menu. The East Sixth Street location adjacent to Whisler’s and Tamale House East makes the block packed with quality food and drink options.

Café No Sé
This hotel cafe from the New Waterloo group (La Condesa, Sway) has Michael Hsu design, massive windows for natural light, and casual wicker chairs for lounging. The menu from Chef Michael Paley (formerly of 21c Museum Hotel Cincinnati) leans toward New American fare like avocado toast with egg and pickled carrot and a Hawaiian-style poke bowl with tuna, olives, pickled jalapeños, and grapefruit.

Dog & Duck Pub
The beloved and dearly missed campus-area pub has returned within a small yet comfortable re-imagining in East Austin. A new menu skews more toward British pub food than the old version, but the large selection of local drafts and global favorites remains.

Emmer & Rye
A new Rainey Street centerpiece featuring Uchi alums, Emmer & Rye combines a base menu of small plates and pastas with an “American dim sum” collection of seasonal fare. Servers tour the restaurant with the dim sum offerings, contributing dish descriptions and pricing before you decide. A strong cocktail menu and a wine list with “New California” selections are also here.

Geraldine’s
Austin’s new Hotel Van Zandt aims for destination dining at Geraldine’s, which boasts a heavy-hitting roster of industry vets like Chef Frank Mnuk (formerly of Uchi) and Pastry Chef Callie Speer (Swift’s Attic). The restaurant’s menu skews toward large family-style platters of Southern food like short ribs and Gulf shrimp. There are even “epic feasts” for six like fried chicken and whole roasted porchetta available with advance notice. There’s a focus on local live music here, with an oversized lounge area for listening.

In-N-Out Burger (South Lamar)
The chain’s fourth Austin-area location is now open near South Lamar Boulevard and 290 just north of Wheatsville Co-op.

Juniper
Uchi alum Nic Yanes pays homage to Northern Italy with a lengthy menu of smart small plates at Juniper. The menu has something for everyone from Arctic char with white wine and fennel to the complex risotto with grated beets and hen-of-the-woods mushrooms. A modern cocktail program features drinks highlighting various Italian amari, and a curated wine list is mostly Old World in composition. Don’t miss the thin pasta with chives and a Parmesan broth.

Oasthouse Gastropub
North Austin gets a German-style gastropub courtesy of the team behind Circle C’s very popular District Kitchen + Cocktails. Pub dishes like fish and chips, poutine, French-dip sandwiches, and pork and spaetzle make this a good spot for groups. There’s a full cocktail menu here and 21 beers on tap.

Paperboy
This East Austin trailer takes a simple idea — breakfast foods and coffee — and executes them with modern style and quality ingredients. The coffee is sourced from Tweed (made by the owners of Houndstooth), making it a sure bet. Breakfast options here range from a wagyu steak-and-egg sandwich on brioche to goat chorizo, egg, and broccoli “savory toast.”

Pinthouse Pizza (South Lamar)
Former Odell head brewer Joe Mohrfeld brings the wildly popular Pinthouse Pizza concept south, near 290 and South Lamar Boulevard in the Brodie Oaks Shopping Center. There are pizzas, salads, nachos, and desserts, but like many brewpubs, the beer is the thing here.

Pizzeria Vetri
Philadelphia’s Italian food master graces Austin with an outlet (one of only three) of his popular pizza chain. A simple menu focuses on pizzas, salads, and desserts, with wines on tap and an extensive beer list. Don’t sleep on the rotolo, a pizza dough snack folded with mortadella and ricotta and topped with pistachio pesto. The dish was named “morsel of the year” by the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Rebel Pizza Bar
Suzi Yi (yes, of Suzi’s China Grill) opened her first pizza spot above the Shoal Creek Boulevard location of Suzi’s in September. Graffiti art from local artists adorns the walls of the space, and a rooftop patio offers bocce ball. There’s a full bar here to complement the menu of thin-crust pizzas, chicken wings, and salads. Takeout and Favor orders are also accepted.

Symon's Burger Joint
Michael Symon’s first foray into Texas is a counter-service burger and hot links restaurant aimed at the University of Texas crowd. An offshoot of Symon’s “B Spot” chain, this idea is part of Urban Outfitters' new Space 24 Twenty which also includes Pizzeria Vetri. Expect a small menu, milkshakes, and queso fries.

Unit-D Pizzeria
This Neapolitan-style pizza restaurant recently joined the busy Manor Road scene. While the pizzas are the featured attraction, don’t overlook the veggies. On a recent visit, the beet salad with yogurt and carrots with balsamic and Moroccan spices were table favorites. A smart beer list featuring Lone Pint and Live Oak is a plus, as is a hip wine list with labels like Folk Machine and Teutonic.

Visconti
Austin’s Italian restaurant boom expands to Westlake with this upscale offering in the new Hotel Granduca. Executive Chef Tom Parlo’s menu is described as a mix of Northern Italian and local seasonal dishes.

Voodoo Doughnut
Dirty Sixth now has an outpost of this beloved Portland, Oregon institution. The shop opens at 7 am Wednesday through Sunday, and has drawn lines as it does in the Pacific Northwest. Note that Sunday hours are more limited than the rest of the week, and expect a bit of a wait regardless of when you visit.

Wu Chow
The long-awaited downtown Chinese restaurant from the Swift’s Attic team arrived earlier this month to early fanfare. The modern space offers dim sum service on the weekends, and also serves some heavily hyped soup dumplings. Dinner reservations are available, and there’s a nice patio out front for mild evenings. The cocktail menu leans toward Tiki drinks, while the soundtrack (much like Swift’s Attic) focuses on classic rap tracks.

Dovetail Pizza is coming to South First Street in mid-November.

Everything is better with friends, especially pizza; and for Austinites, especially when that pizza is created by friends. South Austin is about to receive that very blessing, a pizza collab from a veritable hall of fame of local industry veterans. Dovetail Pizza will open at 1816 S. First St. in mid-November.

The impressive roster behind the concept includes Ben Runkle, Joe Ritchie, and Natalie Davis of Present Tense Hospitality, along with Todd Duplechan (Lenoir, Vixen’s Wedding); Sidney Roberts (G’Raj Mahal); and Alex Manley (Swedish Hill). According to a release, the nostalgic, family-friendly menu will feature pizzas, salads, and pastas, paired with late-night vibes at the full bar.

Each member of the Dovetail team has personal ties to the South Austin neighborhood, according to the release. Duplechan, Manley, and Runkle are longtime friends, while Ritchie and Duplechan both spent time at Union Square Hospitality previously. Present Tense Hospitality operates Salt & Time and Rosen's Bagels in Republic Square, and recently partnered with Roberts to revive G'Raj Mahal.

“The idea for Dovetail Pizza stemmed from a desire to create a place that we would all personally enjoy and could easily go to for a weekly dinner, hang with some friends on the weekend, or just grab a drink after work,” says Runkle in the release.

“Likewise, I’m excited to work with friends old and new to bring a great neighborhood joint to Bouldin Creek,” adds Duplechan.

This new concept will aim to let ingredients speak for themselves, starting with sauce from organic Bianco DiNapoli tomatoes from Northern California. Manley brings her Swedish Hill experience to the project, developing a longer, cold-fermented dough for a light crust that can also hold up to the toppings. Gluten-free dough will also be available.

The menu will feature classic and adventurous pies alike, from spicy italian (tomato sauce, mozzarella, Italian sausage, chilis, onion) and meat (pepperoni, sausage, mortadella, coppa) to crab (with roasted corn, cherry tomatoes, chili crisp); bittersweet (arugula, sweet + hot peppers, smoked eggplant, ricotta); funghi (roasted mushrooms, taleggio, herbs); and seasonal one-off creations. Don't skimp on the drizzle, either: Instead of traditional shredded parmesan or red pepper flake toppings, Dovetail will offer a red (a housemade chile crisp) and green (herb, vinegar, oil) sauce for a finishing drizzle.

Lighter fare will include large salads, while the pasta section showcases classic spaghetti & meatballs, rigatoni a la vodka, and orecchiette. A fried ice cream sundae and soft serve will make it hard to skip dessert, while the beverage menu will round out the whole meal with seasonal cocktails, lower ABV offerings, beer, and easy-drinking natural wines.

Led by creative director Natalie Davis, the restaurant's warm interior incorporates earthy tones, natural wood touches, and local art from the likes of Elizabeth Chiles, Jules Buck Jones, Cheyenne Weaver, and Ft. Lonesome.

“We aimed to create a space that feels grounded with eclectic touches that make people smile, like the chain stitch wallpaper in the bathroom and the kids’ reading nook,” notes Davis in the release. “At the end of the day, we built a place that we wanted in our neighborhood and created an atmosphere that we hope guests want to return to again and again.”

For now, the spot will open for dine-in only from Wednesday through Sunday, 4pm to midnight, with indoor and patio dining, as well as bar seating (which features a late-night menu after 10 pm). Immerse yourself in a different kind of haunted experience at Spider House Ballroom.

Peak spooky season has finally made it to the city limits and there’s no time to waste. We’re making the case for locals and visitors alike to experience monster mashes, haunted happenings, and family-friendly festivities in the days ahead, and there’s something to pique every creepy interest. Thursday, October 27

Lone Star Court presents Howl-O-Ween
Enjoy the moonlight and have a howling good time with your four-legged companion in tow at Lone Star Court. Pet guests will receive treats in the courtyard while their human companions sip wine samplings from Wander + Ivy. The best dressed pups will also be entered into the costume contest, which includes take-home prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Howl-O-Ween admission is free and open to the public.

Wax Myrtle Halloween Pop-Up Bar
One of the city’s most beloved cocktail bars undergoes the pop-up treatment just in time for the most terrifying time of the year. Pop-up attendees can expect a curated cocktail list, spooky decor, and tarot card readings when they enter the House of Wax, located in the Muleshoe Room. Guests can also get lost in the macabre when they experience the TV wall installation playing old horror films on VHS. House of Wax will be open through Monday, October 31. Pop-up entry is free.

Friday, October 28

Ventana Ballet’s UNDEAD
Immerse yourself in a different kind of haunted experience, complete with masterful ballet skills and chilling choreography. Spider House Ballroom will transform into a dynamic, adults-only Halloween show featuring artists from Ventana Ballet performing in multiple dance disciplines. Upon arrival, guests will gather at the bar for pre-show hauntings and spirits of the alcoholic persuasion. Performances in the theatre will follow twice each night. The bar will remain open throughout the evening to fuel the fun. Performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Get tickets here.

Saturday, October 29

Trick or Treat Extravaganza at Music Lane
South Congress hotspot Music Lane is starting the Halloween weekend on a frighteningly good note. Attendees can stock up on sweet treats from participating area shops, explore the pumpkin patch at the Plaza, participate in costume contests, and try their luck at winning giveaway prizes. Parents can bring their kiddos and fur babies to the party for complimentary pet portrait sessions with renowned local photographer, Taylor Starcher. Extravaganza co-host Austin Human Society will also be offering on-site puppy and dog adoptions for those looking to expand their family with a new four-legged member. Entry is free and open to the public.

5th Annual Boo & Brew

Fareground Screen on the Green Fall Feature
Celebrate All Hallow’s Eve with a free, outdoor screening of the cult-favorite film, Hocus Pocus at the Fareground plaza. Seasonal concession specials like happy hour drinks, cotton candy, and popcorn will be available for purchase in addition to the Fareground’s several restaurant counters. Haunted Halloween at the Estate
The Commodore Perry Estate welcomes families to its historic grounds to celebrate Halloween in all its autumn splendor. Tiny ghosts and goblins are encouraged to wear their costumes while they explore the Mansion Inn, the Sunken Gardens, and more haunted hideaways throughout the property. Activities like trick-or-treating at Lutie’s, pumpkin painting, and pastry decorating are on the agenda for both children and grownups to enjoy. The new space plans a soft opening on November 10.

Not every farmers market is so lucky as to have a stand shelling out freshly sliced hot pastrami. Mum Foods brought the people what they didn’t know they needed — and what they promptly fell in love with — for years at three Austin markets, earning acclaim in Texas Monthly for the “best pastrami in the state” all the way back in 2017, and maintaining a juicy reputation since. It is finally taking up a more permanent residence in the Windsor Park neighborhood at 5811 Manor Road.

Officially Mum Foods Smokehouse and Delicatessen, the new space plans a soft opening on November 10 with “more grand opening celebrations to follow.” Fans should, of course, look into the new brick-and-mortar store, but can still keep Mum Foods in their farmers market routines (i.e. eating fresh, fat-dripping slices right at the stand before stashing the rest and hoping it makes it home).

Yes, the pastrami is still the star, sliced thick with a visible layer of fat intact, more like a barbecue brisket than what’s famous on the East Coast. The new space really hammers that point home with the smokehouse and deli equally emphasized, and favorites from both readily available by the pound or in sandwiches.

The latter include old favorites from the Mum Foods Modern Micro Deli — a former popup at the now-closed East Side Cafe — like the reuben-ish Rachel Sandwich with slaw and sauce, or the smoked chicken salad. These days, breads will be made in-house, too, for sandwiches on sourdough rye, pumpernickel, and beef tallow challah.

The barbecue portion includes Central Texas-style brisket, sausage, beef ribs, and smoked turkey. Rounded out with deli sides (supposedly distinct from barbecue sides), salads, and desserts, all made from local ingredients. A mysterious, mostly empty page on the website devoted to barbecue also says “pig roast” and “coming soon.”

Some other clues may be gleaned from the more explicit, sophisticated catering menu, with confit and smoked beef ribs in the colder seasons, and grilled Lockhart quail or hanger steak in the warmer ones.

Along with all these house specialties, the team is bringing local craft beers, wine, and even a coffee bar using Talisman Coffee products. Keeping pace with the meats, these espressos are also house-roasted from Nicaraguan beans grown on a family farm — not any family, but the owner’s for five generations.
